After college my wife and I chose Bonner County for two reasons: coming from Seattle we wanted water (sailing) and mountains (skiing) plus we both had jobs.
Our children were born and raised here, attending local public schools and working for the City of Sandpoint Recreation Department during the summer months. Organic farming, raising sheep and participating in the farmers market were our love that lasted 27 years. Sailing, skiing, soccer, 4-h were all family events.
My 35 year career except for 9 years (while I worked in Alaska), was in Bonner County. First 5 years as Assistant County Engineer, next 6 years as County Commissioner, then 12 years as Development Director at Schweitzer Mountain Resort and 4 years as Development Director at Stoneridge Golf and Recreation Community and finally 3 years as Principal Planner for Consultants. All the work focusing around water/sewer operations, transportation, planning and design, public administration, and politics. Now add the 9 years of City Administrator duties where I managed all daily city operations. It is these years of public and private service that provided me the background, education and experiences to understand and communicate with all the city departments.
Now with my free time I volunteer and participated in the:
You can not resolve a concern or incorporate a suggestion if you only listen. You must must hear what is being said.
Sandpoint is an amazing place with a great diversity of people and opportunities. Sandpoint will continue to change and the best way to accommodate the change is part of the change. In doing so we must preserve and work to keep a strong economy, ensure there is adequate and safe water to drink, sewage disposal that keeps our waters pristine, have adequate transportation to serve the needs of everyone, health care and emergency services that are state of the art. Parks and recreation for all to enjoy, housing that that is affordable and available to all. These are key components of a vibrant and sustainable community.
No one component stands out above the other as they all must exist. A city is like a spiders web with the city at the center and all these key components connecting the web. A good functioning city makes sure the web is not broken and as a city council member my goal will be to ensure the web is not broke. This takes Compassion, Honesty, Integrity, Vision, and Empathy. All qualities I bring to the City.
